Scotland #8: Road Trip to Thurso
Initially our plan was to go to the Isle of Skye but the weather forecast was so bad that we decided to change our plans (we’re getting good at this).
Since it’s a road trip we obviously have to include some drive-by pictures.
Since we already had one (arguable unguessable) film location why not add an easier one to the mix.
Maybe you already know it which movie this is featured in but let’s make it very easy.
Oh my god its Harry Potter! We assume that you guessed right before so congratulations!\ Now that we ticked this off our bucket list let’s head to the next location.
If we would give you one guess what this lake is called then your most likely guessing correct as well. It’s Loch Ness where we did a quick stop in Fort Augustus.
As you can see even Cooper was keeping an eye out for Nessie but couldn’t find her either.
One of the highlights in Fort Augustus was a series of locks that is part of the Caledonian Canal. We didn’t see any ships passing through but it was impressive nonetheless for something built in 1800.
Before leaving we decided to grab something to eat. While ordering fish and chips we realized that it took us this long to eat it for the first time on our trip.
Similar to the day before it was already quite late when we set-up our tent but this time we were able to enjoy a lovely sunset.
The next day the road trip continued along the coast up to the north.
Our first stop of this day was at the Ousdale Broch. A broch is a tower that is build by only placing stones on top of each other. It’s nice to see how much of it survived the last 5000 years. Next of it was also a village but there were only faint outlines of what existed back in the day.
The next stop was further up north. This should give you a rough estimate how windy it was…
On the northern part the coast was very flat but it lead to some really steep cliffs.
In the distance we already saw the reason we came here: The Duncansby Stacks
It was really impressive seeing those giant stone pillars sticking out of the water.
At the end of the day we arrived in Thurso and had a delicious burger in a pub (since dogs weren’t allowed in the restaurant). The people there were really nice and one of the guests even organized a sausage for Cooper.\ A really cool thing that we saw there for the first time was a garden for everyone in the pedestrian area. They even explained how to pick each individual plant so that they last for a long time.
We had to go to bed early that night since we had to catch another ferry early next morning.
